ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Carpet pile

Carpet pile is the way the little pieces of yarn or fabric stand up on a carpet. Imagine you have a bunch of straws lined up next to each other on a table. When they stand up straight, they have a tall pile. Now, if you push all the straws down so they are flat on the table, that's a short pile. The same thing happens with the little fibers on a carpet.

There are different ways to make the pile on a carpet. One way is called cut pile. It's like if you cut straws into little pieces and stuck them onto the table. The carpet fibers are all the same length and stand up straight. This type of carpet is soft and good for things like bedrooms.

Another way to make carpet pile is called loop pile. Imagine if the straws on the table were all circles or ovals. They would be loops instead of just standing straight up. In loop pile carpet, the fibers are bent into little loops instead of being cut short. This makes the carpet strong and durable, like if you pull on the loop, it won't easily come out. Loop pile carpet is good for busy areas like a living room or hallway because it can handle lots of people walking on it.

Some carpets have a mix of both cut pile and loop pile. They have the softness of cut pile and the strength of loop pile. These carpets are great for places where you want something cozy but also need it to be durable, like a family room.

So, carpet pile is just the way the little fibers stand up on a carpet. It can be tall pile, short pile, or a mixture of both. And different types of pile are good for different places in your home.
