Catastasis (also called catastasis in biology) is when something changes (or is changed) in a way that affects the whole system. The most common example would be a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a tornado on the other side of the world. This is known as the "butterfly effect" and is an example of catastasis. In biology, catastasis is the sudden change or alteration in an ecosystem caused by the introduction of a new species or the increase or decrease in an existing species. For example, if a new species of aquatic plant is introduced into a lake, it can cause a change in the water chemistry that affects all other species in the lake. This could result in some species becoming endangered.
