ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chain complex

Imagine you have a bunch of toys, and they are all connected to each other in a line. Each toy has a string tied to it, and the string goes to the next toy. It looks like a big chain of toys.

Now imagine that each toy is actually a math problem, and each string represents a rule or a formula that tells you how to get from one math problem to the next one. This big chain of toys is a lot like a chain complex.

A chain complex is a series of math problems, each one connected to the next by a rule or a formula. The rules tell you how to get from one problem to the next one, just like the strings told you how to get from one toy to the next one in our game.

Sometimes, the rules or formulas are really simple, and sometimes they are really complicated. But what's important is that each one builds on the last one, like the toys in our game.

The cool thing about chain complexes is that if you follow all the rules or all the formulas, you can learn something really important or solve a really big problem. It's like putting all the pieces of a puzzle together.
