Chain gang

A chain gang is a group of prisoners who are forced to work while chained together by a chain. You know how you might hold hands with your friends during a game of tag? Well, imagine you couldn't let go of their hand, even if you wanted to. That's what it's like for prisoners in a chain gang.

The chain is connected to everyone's ankles or wrists, so they have to move in sync with each other. They might be digging ditches, building roads, or doing other hard labor. They work outside in the heat for many hours each day.

Chain gangs were used a long time ago when people thought that if they made prisoners work very hard, they would learn their lesson and not break the law again. Nowadays, chain gangs are not as common because people think that it is not a good way to make people learn their lesson.
