ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Champlain Sea

A long time ago, before you and I were born, there was a big area of land called Canada. But wait, there was also a big sea that covered parts of Canada too! This sea was called the Champlain Sea.

The Champlain Sea started forming about 13,000 years ago when the big ice sheets covering Canada started to melt. As the ice sheets melted, they released a lot of water into the land and formed the Champlain Sea.

Now, the Champlain Sea was different from the ocean we know today. It was a very shallow sea with lots of sand and mud at the bottom. It was also home to a lot of different animals, like whales, seals, and even some sharks!

But, as time went by, the sea slowly started to disappear. This was because the land started rising up and the sea started to drain out into the larger ocean. Eventually, the Champlain Sea disappeared completely, leaving behind lots of evidence of its existence, like fossils and rocks.

So, that's the story of the Champlain Sea – a big and shallow sea that once covered parts of Canada a long, long time ago!
