ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chan (given name)

Okay kiddo! So you know how everyone has a name? Some people have a first name and a last name, right? Well, "chan" is a first name that people have in Japan.

In Japan, it's common to use something called "honorifics" when addressing people. These are words that you add to someone's name to show respect or politeness. For example, if you're talking to an adult you might add "san" to their name, like "Mrs. Johnson-san."

But sometimes people use "chan" instead of "san" for kids or close friends. It's kind of like adding "-y" or "-ie" to the end of someone's name to make it cuter or friendlier.

So if someone is named "Yuko" for example, their close friends or family might call them "Yuko-chan" instead of just "Yuko-san."

Does that make sense, little one?
