ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Charles Becker

Okay, little one, let's talk about a man named Charles Becker. Charles was a police officer who worked in New York City a long time ago, in the early 1900s. He was like a grown-up version of a police officer you might see on TV or in a movie.

Now, even though he was a police officer, Charles was not a very good person. He did something very bad - he got involved with some bad guys who did illegal things like stealing and gambling. Charles tried to use his position as a police officer to help these guys do their illegal things without getting caught.

Eventually, Charles got into a really big trouble. See, one of the bad guys he was helping ended up killing someone else. And the police found out that Charles had helped this guy do the bad thing. So they arrested Charles and charged him with being involved in the murder.

At his trial, there was a lot of evidence that showed Charles was guilty. Even though he said he didn't do anything wrong, the jury didn't believe him. They found him guilty and he was sentenced to death. That means he was going to be killed by the government for what he had done.

So, even though he was once a police officer, Charles became known as a bad person who did bad things. And because of what he did, he had to pay the price by losing his own life.
