Charles Schepens

Charles Schepens was a special type of doctor called an ophthalmologist. Can you say that word with me? Oph-thal-mol-o-gist! That's a big word! An ophthalmologist is a doctor who takes care of people's eyes.

Now, Charles Schepens was a really important ophthalmologist because he helped invent a type of surgery that helped people who had problems with their retina. The retina is a special part of your eye that helps you see. Without a healthy retina, it's hard to see things clearly.

Dr. Schepens was born in Belgium but he moved to the United States to work at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was a smart man and worked really hard to figure out how to help people with retina problems. He invented a special tool to help guide surgeons during retina surgery, making it safer and more successful.

Thanks to his hard work, many people can now have their retina fixed and can see better. Dr. Schepens was a hero to many people who had problems with their eyes, and he is still remembered and celebrated for all of his hard work.
