Chernobyl sarcophagus

When people make a big mess, sometimes they have to cover it up with a big blanket so nobody gets hurt by it. That's kind of what happened when there was an accident at a place called Chernobyl a long time ago.

At Chernobyl, some grown-ups were playing with something called nuclear energy, which can make things like electricity. But they weren't playing safely, and something went wrong. It made a big mess and a lot of radiation, which is like invisible bad waves that can hurt people who get too close.

To keep the radiation from spreading and hurting more people, the grown-ups put a big blanket, or "sarcophagus," over the place where the mess was. But it wasn't a regular blanket. It was made of special materials to keep the radiation inside and protect people outside.

Now, because the big blanket is getting old and starting to wear out, the grown-ups are building a new and stronger one to keep everyone safe. They're working very hard to make it the best it can be, so nobody gets hurt from the bad waves.
