ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chess

Chess is a game for two players. Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, 1 queen, and 1 king. The goal is to checkmate your opponent's king. This means to trap their king so it cannot move and it's not defended by any of their other pieces. You can do this by moving your pieces around the board and attacking the opponent's pieces. The pieces all move differently. The pawns can only move forward one square at a time, but they can capture an opposing piece by moving diagonally forward one square. Knights can move in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces. The bishops can move any number of squares diagonally. The rooks can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically. The queen can move any number of squares in any direction. The king can move one square in any direction.
