ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chess terminology

Chess is a game that has a lot of special words to describe what's going on. Think of it like a secret language that only people who play chess know how to use.

Let's start with the basics. The game is played on a checkered board with 64 squares. Each player has 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks (also called castles), two knights (also called horses), two bishops, and eight pawns.

The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to put it in a position where it cannot escape capture. This is often shortened to just "mate."

Now, let's learn some chess terminology:

1. Attack: When one piece is threatening to capture another.
2. Defense: When a piece is protecting another from capture.
3. Check: When the king is in danger of being captured on the next move. The player must get the king out of check right away.
4. Checkmate: When the king is in check and there is no way to save it. The game is over.
5. Stalemate: When there are no more legal moves for the player whose turn it is, but the king is not in check. The game is a draw.
6. Capture: When a piece takes another piece off the board.
7. En passant: A special pawn capture that can happen when a pawn moves two squares on its first move and lands next to an enemy pawn. The enemy pawn can capture the moving pawn "en passant," which means "in passing."
8. Castling: A move that allows the king to move two squares towards a rook, and the rook to move to the square the king crossed, in one turn. This move is used to protect the king and get the rook into the game.
9. Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (except a king).
10. Pin: When one piece is attacking another, but that piece cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece behind it.
11. Fork: When a piece attacks two or more pieces at the same time.
12. Skewer: When one piece attacks a more valuable piece that is behind another less valuable piece.
13. Zugzwang: A situation when any move a player makes will weaken their position.

Remember, there are many more terms in chess, but these are some of the most important ones to know. With practice, you'll be able to use them like a pro and win many games!
