ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chesterton's fence

Chesterton’s fence is an idea that suggests we should think carefully before making changes and think about why certain rules or structures are in place. It’s kind of like trying to picture a fence around something, and it has a locked gate. Before we open the locked gate, we should think: why is there a fence and why is it locked? Before we make changes, we should try to understand why the fence or rules were put in place in the first place. This way, we’ll make sure the changes we make make sense and are right for the situation.
