ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chicago Climate Exchange

The Chicago Climate Exchange, or CCX for short, is a place where people can do something good for the planet!

You know how when you use too much electricity or drive too much in your car, it can create a lot of pollution that harms the earth? Well, at the CCX, companies and organizations can trade something called carbon credits to help reduce their pollution.

A carbon credit is like a sticker that says "I didn't pollute as much as I could have!" Basically, a company that doesn't create as much pollution as they are allowed to can get these stickers and sell them to other companies who pollute more than they should. So the company that didn't pollute as much gets some extra money, and the company that needs to pollute less can use the stickers to cancel out some of their pollution.

This helps make companies more aware of how much pollution they are creating and encourages them to find ways to reduce it.

The CCX started in Chicago, but eventually companies from all over the world joined in to help make our planet a better place.
