Many ancient civilizations had creation stories, which are stories that explain where people and things come from. Chinese creation myths explain how the world and people first came to be. They involve magical events, gods, and goddesses. In one of the most popular Chinese creation myths, the first god, Pangu, woke up in a chaotic and formless universe. To make order, Pangu created the sky and the earth and separated them with a huge axe. He supported the sky with four gods, and then he made the air to create a balance. Then, Pangu made the moon, the stars, and the sun. After that, he used his breath to create the Earth's living beings. Finally he shaped people out of the yellow clay of the Earth.
