Chord (aeronautics)

A chord in aeronautics is kind of like the straight line that connects the front and back of a bird's wings when they are stretched out. It's a line that goes from one end of the wing to the other. The distance from the front of the wing to the back along this line is called the chord length.

So just like how a bird's wings use the chord to generate lift and stay in the air, airplanes also have wings with chords that help lift the plane up and keep it flying. In fact, the shape of the wing, including the length of the chord, is very important for how the plane flies. Different planes have different chord lengths depending on their size and function. And engineers and designers spend a lot of time figuring out just the right chord length and shape for each plane to get the best lift and efficiency.
