Christianization of Kievan Rus' was when the people of Kievan Rus', which was an area in eastern Europe that existed between the 9th and 13th centuries, began to follow the Christian religion. This happened when the ruler of Kievan Rus', Grand Prince of Kiev Volodymyr I, made Christianity the official religion of Kievan Rus' in 988. Before that, people in Kievan Rus' believed in many different gods from different religious traditions and cultures. To help people learn about Christianity, priests from the Byzantine Empire helped teach people about the religion. Monasteries, churches, and other religious buildings also started being built to help people learn about and follow Christianity. Through this process, Kievan Rus' stopped believing in many gods and instead began to believe in one God, Jesus, and the teachings of the Christian faith.
