ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Christmas in July

Dear child,

You know how we celebrate Christmas in December every year, right? Well, sometimes people want to celebrate it again in the middle of summer when it is hot outside. This is called "Christmas in July".

It’s like having a pretend Christmas in the summer! We decorate our houses with Christmas lights and ornaments and we sing Christmas songs. We also exchange gifts with our friends and family, just like we do in December.

People like to have Christmas in July because it’s a way to have fun and break up the routine of everyday life. Plus, it's summer so we can have BBQs and swim parties too!

Some people believe that Christmas in July started a long time ago, in the southern hemisphere where December is actually in the middle of summer. They would celebrate Christmas then, so they started having a second Christmas in July, for fun.

So basically, it's just like having Christmas twice a year but in the middle of summer. It's different and special because it doesn't happen often. It’s also a way to bring some cheer and joy into our lives, even when it's not the traditional holiday season.
