ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chromesthesia

Chromesthesia is when a person sees colors when they hear sounds. Imagine listening to a song and it makes you see different colors like red, blue, green, etc. It's like there are fireworks going off in your imagination, but instead of hearing explosions, you're hearing music and seeing colors.

Our brains process sounds and colors in different parts, but someone with chromesthesia has those wires crossed so that the sound part of their brain activates the color part of their brain, causing them to see colors when they hear sounds. It's kind of like when you see someone eat something really sour and their face scrunches up - your brain automatically knows what that face means because it has learned to associate that expression with sourness. In this case, the person's brain has learned to associate certain sounds with certain colors, even though there's no logical connection between the two.

The experience of chromesthesia can be different for each person, and can also be influenced by the type of sound they're hearing (like a voice vs. a guitar), the musical key, the tempo, and other factors. Some people might see flashes of color, while others might see a constant stream of changing colors. It can be a cool and unique experience, but it can also be overwhelming or distracting for some people.
