ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chronology of ancient Greek mathematicians

Math is pretty cool and the Ancient Greeks were really good at it! Let me tell you about some of the famous Greek mathematicians and what they did.

First, there was Thales. He lived a long, long time ago and was really interested in figuring out the secrets of the world around him. He is considered the father of geometry which means he liked to figure out how to measure things and how to draw maps.

Then there was Pythagoras who was really into numbers. He was super smart and figured out a really important theorem. A theorem is like a rule that is always true. Pythagoras' theorem says that if you have a triangle with a right angle (like a corner of a square), then you can figure out the length of the longest side (called the hypotenuse) by using the other two sides (called legs) and a little bit of multiplication.

Next up is Euclid. He wrote a book called Elements which was all about geometry. It talked about how to measure things and how to draw cool shapes. Even though he lived a long, long time ago, people still use his book to teach geometry today!

Another famous mathematician was Archimedes. He was really good at figuring out how to measure things that were really big or really small. He also came up with the idea of pi which is a number that tells you how big a circle is.

Finally, there was Euclid's student, Apollonius. He was really into circles and curves. He figured out a lot of things about how to measure circles and how to draw them perfectly.

All of these Greek mathematicians were very smart and curious about the world around them. They figured out a lot of important things that we still use today in math class!
