ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chsh

Okay kiddo, let's talk about chsh. First off, it's not a word, it's an abbreviation! Chsh stands for "CHallenge-Response" and "SHared" which basically means that two people are going to play a game together and share some information.

This game is called the "CHSH game" and it goes like this: one person (let's call them Person A) is going to choose either 0 or 1, and the other person (Person B) is going to choose either 0 or 1 as well. They won't tell each other what they've chosen, but then they'll both share their answers with a third person who is watching the game (let's call them the Referee).

The Referee has a special rule they follow to decide who wins the game. If Person A's answer plus Person B's answer equals 0 (zero), then Person A wins. If the sum equals 1, then Person B wins.

But here's the tricky part! Person A and Person B can't talk to each other once the game has started. They might try to cheat by agreeing on a strategy beforehand, but this won't work because the Referee can tell whether or not they're playing fair. Plus, they'll play this game many times and switch who gets to be Person A and Person B for each round, so they won't be able to work out a strategy in advance.

What's the point of this game, you ask? Well, it turns out that if Person A and Person B are playing using a classical computer, then there's a limit to how often they can win the game. But if they're playing using a special kind of computer called a quantum computer, they can win the game more often than classical computers can!

Scientists use this game to study quantum mechanics and to test whether or not a computer is actually a quantum computer. That's why chsh is a really important concept in the world of quantum computing.
