ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Circuit of culture

Imagine you're playing with blocks, and you build a tower. The tower is made up of different blocks, and each block has a different shape or color. That tower is kind of like the "culture" of something - it's made up of different pieces that all come together to create something bigger.

Now let's imagine you're building a tower of culture for something, like a TV show or a band. This tower has five blocks or "circuits." Each block represents a different part of the culture surrounding this thing:

1. Representation - this is how the thing is presented to people. This might include advertising, images, or other things that help people understand what the thing is.

2. Identity - this is how people perceive the thing. It could include what people think of the thing, what they associate with it, or what they expect from it.

3. Production - this is how the thing is made. It might include the people who make it, the tools they use, or the places where it's made.

4. Consumption - this is how people interact with the thing. It could include how people watch or listen to it, what they talk about related to it, or how they share it with others.

5. Regulation - this is how the thing is controlled. This could include laws or rules about how it's made, distributed, or consumed.

These five blocks together create the "circuit of culture" for the thing - they all work together to create the overall culture surrounding it. Just like you can't build a tower with just one block (you need all five for a circuit of culture), you can't fully understand the culture of something without understanding all of its different components.
