ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Circumstantial speech

Circumstantial speech is when someone talks a lot and gives a lot of details, but it takes them a while to get to the point. It's like when you tell a story and you start with what you had for breakfast, and then you talk about what you wore, and then you talk about who you saw on the way to school, and then finally you get to what happened at recess.

People who use circumstantial speech might not even realize they're doing it. They just keep talking and talking and don't seem to be getting anywhere, but they eventually get to what they wanted to say. It can be frustrating for the listener because they have to be very patient and wait for the speaker to finally get to the point.

So, if you hear someone using circumstantial speech, just be patient and listen carefully. Eventually, they will get to what they want to say, even if it takes them a while.
