ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Civil marriage

Civil marriage is when two people make a promise to each other to be married. They sign a piece of paper (called a marriage license) that makes it official. The couple then has a wedding and celebrates with friends and family. Being married gives the couple rights and responsibilities, like being able to make decisions together, or joining together to own property. Civil marriage also gives couples financial benefits and protections if something bad happens like death or illness.
