ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Civil wrong

A civil wrong is when someone does something that breaks a law, but it’s not a crime (like theft or murder). It’s when someone does something wrong that affects someone else, like not following a contract. For example, maybe someone agrees to rent an apartment to someone else, but then doesn’t follow through and doesn’t give them the key. That would be a civil wrong because the person renting the apartment wouldn’t be able to live there, and they might lose money if they had to find somewhere else to stay. Civil wrongs can also involve hurting someone else’s feelings, like calling someone hurtful names or spreading rumors about them, which is called “defamation”. A civil wrong could also include something like someone breaking a promise to do something or not doing something they said they would do. This is called a “breach of contract”. When civil wrongs happen, the person affected can go to court to try and get paid back for what they lost or suffered.
