ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Clean Wehrmacht

Okay kiddo, I'm going to tell you about something called the Clean Wehrmacht myth. During World War II, the German army was called the Wehrmacht. After the war was over, some people tried to say that even though the Nazi leaders were bad, the regular soldiers in the Wehrmacht were not as bad. They said that the regular soldiers were just doing their job and not really involved in the horrible things that happened during the war.

But the truth is, many regular soldiers in the Wehrmacht were involved in things like killing innocent people and helping with the Holocaust. Even though they didn't make the orders, they still went along with them. So the idea of a "Clean Wehrmacht" is really just a myth that some people made up to try to make the German soldiers seem better than they really were. It's important that we remember the truth about what happened during the war, even if it's difficult or uncomfortable.
