Clear-air turbulence

Clear-air turbulence is when the air around a plane turns rough and makes it bumpy while flying. It is called 'clear-air' because it happens when there are no clouds around, so it can't really be seen by the pilots. The air can get bumpy because of things like strong winds, air currents, and different air temperatures in different areas. The pilots make adjustments to the plane to try to make the ride smoother.
