ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cleave (fiber)

When you hear the word "cleave," it means to split or separate something into two parts. When we talk about cleaving fiber, we are talking about breaking up a long, thin strand of material called fiber into two smaller strands.

Fiber is thin and flexible, like a piece of string, and it is often used to make things like clothes, carpets, and ropes. When we need to make the fiber smaller, we can't just break it with our hands because it is very tough. Instead, we use a special machine that can apply a lot of force to the fiber in one spot, causing it to split apart into two pieces.

This splitting process is called cleavage, and it requires a lot of precision and skill to do it correctly. The two resulting pieces of fiber will each be thinner and shorter than the original, and they can then be used to make smaller items or combined with other fibers to make something new and useful.
