Climacteric (botany)

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes fruits and veggies start to get wrinkly and brown when they've been sitting out for a while? Well, that's because of something called climacteric.

Climacteric is a fancy word that means a fruit or veggie is really close to being completely ripe. When that happens, it starts producing a gas called ethylene. This gas helps to speed up the ripening process and makes the fruit or veggie get softer and sweeter.

Now, not all fruits and veggies go through climacteric. But some really popular ones like bananas, apples, tomatoes, and avocados do! And that's why you might notice them starting to change colors or get softer when you leave them out for too long.

So remember kiddo, climacteric is when a fruit or veggie is almost totally ripe and starts producing gas that helps it get even sweeter and softer.
