ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Clinching (metalworking)

Okay kiddo, you know how sometimes when you need to connect two pieces of metal to make something like a car or a table, you use something called screws or bolts?

Well, sometimes screws or bolts might not be the best option because they can be too heavy or not strong enough for the job. That's where something called clinching comes in!

Clinching is a special way of joining two pieces of metal together without using screws or bolts. Instead, we use a machine to press the two pieces of metal together really, really hard until they stick together like glue!

The machine we use is kind of like a big stapler or a punch. It has two parts - one on top and one on the bottom. We put the two pieces of metal we want to join between those two parts and then the machine does the rest of the work.

First, the machine pushes the top part down really hard onto the metal. This squeezes the metal together and makes it flatten out. Then, the bottom part of the machine punches a little hole into the metal where the two pieces are joined.

Finally, the machine pushes the flattened metal from the top part of it into the little hole in the metal from the bottom part. This makes them stick together really tightly!

Clinching is a really cool way to join metal together because it's pretty strong and doesn't use any extra parts. It's also really quick and easy to do, so it saves us a lot of time and money!
