Clinical death

When a person's heart stops beating and they stop breathing, this is called clinical death. It means that the person is not alive and their body is not working like it normally does.

Doctors and other medical professionals can try to help the person who has clinical death by starting their heart again and helping them breathe again. This is called resuscitation.

Sometimes a person who has had clinical death for a few minutes can be revived, but sometimes they cannot. If someone cannot be revived, it means they have died.

It's important to remember that clinical death is not the same thing as permanent death. Even if someone is clinically dead for a few minutes, they may still have a chance to be revived and live again.
