ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Closure of the Suez Canal (1967–1975)

The Suez Canal is like a really big bathtub that connects two big bodies of water, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It’s a really important path for ships to travel through so they don’t have to go all the way around the bottom of Africa to get to other parts of the world.

In the year 1967, there was a big war between Israel and some other countries, and one of these countries controlled the land where the Suez Canal was located. They decided to close the canal because they didn’t want any ships from Israel to go through it. This made it really hard for other countries to use the Suez Canal to get to other places.

It was like they blocked the only road to your friend’s house and you had to go all the way around the city to get there. It would take a lot longer and be really inconvenient.

The canal stayed closed for a long time, from 1967 until 1975, when everyone finally agreed to open it back up again. During this time, people had to find other ways to get their boats and goods from one side of the world to the other. It was like finding a new path in the woods when the usual path is blocked.

Finally, the countries decided to work together to reopen the Suez Canal and make sure that everyone could use it to get to where they needed to go. It was like when your parents and your friend’s parents work together to make a new path so everyone can get to your friend’s house easier.
