Code of Hammurabi

The Code of Hammurabi is a set of laws that was made a really long time ago by a king named Hammurabi who lived in Babylon, which is now modern-day Iraq. The Code was written down on a big stone tablet and had a lot of rules that people had to follow.

Think of a big list of rules that your parent or teacher might have for you: like cleaning up your toys, sharing with others, and being honest. Well, the Code of Hammurabi was like that list but for a whole society of people!

There were many different kinds of rules in the Code, but they were all meant to keep people safe and make sure everyone was treated fairly. For example, if someone hurt someone else, they would have to be punished. If someone stole something, they would have to give it back, and if someone broke something, they would have to pay for it.

The Code of Hammurabi was really important because it was one of the first times that laws were written down and put in one place for everyone to see. It helped to create order in Hammurabi's kingdom, and set an example for other civilizations around the world to follow.
