ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coffee steeping

Have you ever heard someone say "I am going to steep my coffee"? It basically means they are going to make their coffee.

Before we start, let's talk about what coffee is. Coffee is a drink that many adults like to have in the morning or during the day. It has a very strong flavor and it gives people energy to do things.

When people say they are going to steep their coffee, they mean they are going to pour hot water over coffee grounds. These coffee grounds are like tiny pieces of dried bean.

The hot water makes the coffee grounds soft and soaks up all the flavor. This is called "brewing." After a certain amount of time, the person will remove the coffee grounds from the water. This makes the coffee ready to drink.

Different people like their coffee to be steeped for different amounts of time. Some people like their coffee very strong, so they steep it for a long time. Other people like their coffee to be weaker, so they steep it for a shorter amount of time. It really depends on a person's personal preference.

So that's what steeping your coffee means. It's just a fancy way of saying you are making your coffee by pouring hot water over coffee grounds and letting them soak for a certain amount of time.
