Collegiate Gothic in North America

Okay little one, you know how when you see a castle in movies or cartoons, it looks really cool and old fashioned? Well some people in North America thought it would be fun to build schools and universities that looked like fancy castles too! They called this style "collegiate gothic".

This design started becoming popular around the early 1900s, and it was inspired by the medieval architecture styles that were used in Europe during the Gothic period. Architects thought it would be neat to combine this old-fashioned look with modern technology and create some really impressive buildings.

Usually, these buildings looked like big stone castles or churches. They would have lots of intricate decorations and carvings, like gargoyles or detailed arches above doorways. Some schools even added stained glass windows, just like in fancy old churches.

These fancy and unique buildings helped to give schools more character and pride. Many people thought they were beautiful and important, so they became a common design style for universities and colleges all over North America. Today, some buildings in this style are even protected as historical landmarks because they are so special and interesting!
