Colonial India

Welcome, little one! Today, I want to talk to you about colonial India. A long time ago, India wasn't a separate country like it is today. Instead, it was ruled by another country: Great Britain. This was called being a colony.

The British started coming to India in the 1600s. They came for many reasons, like to trade goods like tea, spices, and textiles. The British made a lot of money from this trade, and soon they wanted more control over India.

So the British set up a trading company called the East India Company. This company had a lot of power in India, and it slowly started to take over the country. It became a very big and strong company, almost like a government.

In the 1800s, the British government took over control of India from the East India Company. They ruled India for almost 200 years! During this time, the British had a lot of power and control over India. They forced many changes on the Indian people, like making them learn English, using British money instead of Indian money, and more.

The British also took a lot of resources from India, like spices, tea, and cotton. They made a lot of money from this, but it didn't always benefit the Indian people. Many Indians were poor and struggled to make a living while the British became richer and richer.

Eventually, some Indians started to protest against British rule. They wanted their own independence and to be able to govern their own country. This started a movement called the Indian National Movement, which eventually led to India becoming independent from British rule in 1947.

So, in summary, colonial India was a time when Great Britain ruled over India and had a lot of power and control over Indian people and resources. It lasted almost 200 years, and eventually, Indians fought for their independence and gained it in 1947.
