ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Color terminology for race

Okay kiddo, so you know how people come in different colors, right? Those colors are called racial categories. But there are a lot of different words that people use to describe those colors, and sometimes it can be confusing.

Some people use the word "black" to describe people who have dark skin. And they might use the word "white" to describe people who have light skin. But those words can be kind of confusing, because skin isn't really black or white like a piece of paper.

Other people might use words like "African-American" or "Caucasian" to describe skin color. But those words can be confusing too, because not everyone who has dark skin is from Africa, and not everyone who has light skin is from Europe.

So, some people have started to use more specific words to describe skin color. For example, they might use "brown" to describe someone who has skin that's darker than white, but not as dark as black. Or they might use "beige" to describe someone who has very light skin, but not quite white.

There are also a lot of other words that people use for skin color, like "tan", "olive", "yellow", and "red". And some people might use multiple words to describe their skin color, because it's not always easy to find just one word that fits perfectly.

So even though there are a lot of different words to describe skin color, it's important to remember that race is just one part of who a person is. There's a lot more to every person than just their skin color!
