Okay kiddo, you know how rockets blast off into space, right? Well, those rockets can carry people too! NASA, which is like a big government club of space enthusiasts, wanted to find a way to send people to space regularly without having to rely on other countries or private companies all the time. That's why they started a program called "Commercial Crew Development".
This program is all about building partnerships with private companies to develop spaceships that can carry people to and from the International Space Station (ISS), without using old rockets from the past. By having more spaceships available, NASA can start sending astronauts to the ISS more often and in a safer way.
NASA decided to choose two companies, SpaceX and Boeing, to build their own spaceships for this program. They were given some money to develop their spacecraft and to test them out to make sure they're safe for humans.
After a lot of tests and trials, both SpaceX and Boeing created their own unique spacecraft called the Crew Dragon and the CST-100 Starliner respectively. These spacecraft are designed to launch on top of powerful rockets, just like in the movies.
Once these spaceships are ready and NASA approves them, they'll take astronauts to and from the ISS like taxis. This way, America can return to being a leader in the space exploration business all by itself!
