ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Common-law marriage

Common law marriage is when a man and a woman live together as a married couple, but they didn't get married in a church or courthouse. They act like they are married, by living together and being like a family, but they don't have any papers or documents that say they are married. It is like they are married without going through the process of a regular wedding.
