ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Commonwealth English

Okay kiddo, you know how we live in the United States, right? And we speak American English? Well, there are other countries that used to be ruled by England many years ago, and they all speak their own version of English called Commonwealth English.

Commonwealth English is different from American English in a few ways. For example, they use different words for some things. In America, we might say “truck” but in Commonwealth countries, they might say “lorry”. They also spell some words differently, like “colour” instead of “color” and “centre” instead of “center”.

Another thing that’s different is the way people talk. Have you ever heard someone from England talk with an accent? Well, that’s because they use different sounds and pronunciations when they speak. For example, the way they say the letter “r” is different than the way we say it in America.

But even though there are some differences, people who speak Commonwealth English can still understand people who speak American English (and vice versa). So it’s really cool that even though we speak different versions of English, we can still communicate with each other!
