A compensator is a device (usually a part of a machine) that helps keep something steady and in balance. In control theory, a compensator is a device used to adjust or 'compensate' for any changes in the performance of a machine. If the machine starts to do something wrong or goes off balance, the compensator will help to bring it back in balance. It does this by sending signals to the machine to let it know what it's doing wrong, and how to correct. By constantly adjusting itself, the machine can stay balanced and working properly.
