ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Complex contagion

Imagine you have lots of toys, and one day you bring a shiny new toy to your preschool. All your friends see it and want it too! They start to ask you if they can play with it, and you say, "Sure!" Your friends begin to play with the shiny new toy, and they love it so much that they tell their friends about it. Suddenly, everyone in the preschool wants to play with the shiny new toy, and it's spreading like crazy!

This is a bit like complex contagion. Sometimes, when something is new or different, it can be hard to get other people interested. But when a lot of people start to like it or want it, others may be more likely to join in too. It's kind of like a chain reaction - the more people that are interested, the more people will become interested too.

Complex contagion can happen with many things besides toys, like ideas or behaviors. For example, if a lot of kids at your school start wearing a certain type of shoes, it might become more popular and even more kids may want to wear them too.

Overall, complex contagion means that things can become more popular or well-known when lots of people are interested in them or talking about them.
