ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Confession (law)

Confession in law is when someone admits that they did something wrong. It's kind of like when you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar and you say, "I took the cookie." Sometimes when people confess, they do it because they feel bad about what they did and want to try to make things right. Other times, they might confess because they are worried about getting in trouble and hope that by telling the truth, they will get a better outcome. In the legal system, a confession can be used as evidence in a trial to help determine whether or not someone is guilty. However, it's important to make sure that the confession was given voluntarily and not as a result of fear, intimidation, or coercion.
