ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Consonance and dissonance

Okay, imagine you have a group of friends who like to sing together. Sometimes when they sing, the sounds they make are very happy and go well together, like when they all sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" in the same key. This is called consonance.

But sometimes when they sing, the sounds they make don't go together very well and it sounds a little yucky, like when they try to sing different songs at the same time. This is called dissonance.

So, consonance is when the sounds go well together and everything sounds nice and happy. Dissonance is when the sounds don't go well together and it sounds a little bit yucky.
