ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Constitutional patriotism

Constitutional patriotism means loving and being loyal to your country because of its constitution (or set of rules) that guides how things are done in your country. Just like how you have some rules at home that everyone in your family follows to make sure everyone is happy and safe, your country has rules that everyone follows to make sure the country is happy and safe.

For example, in your country's constitution, it might say that every person has the right to speak their mind and believe what they want without being punished. This means that everyone in the country is allowed to say what they want without being hurt by the government or other people. When you love your country, you also love these rules because they make your country a better place for everyone to live.

Constitutional patriotism doesn't mean blindly following your country no matter what it does. If your country breaks its own rules, like not allowing people to speak their mind or punishing people because of their beliefs or their skin color, you can be critical of your country and speak up to make it better. This is because you care about the rules and want everyone in your country to be treated fairly under the law.

So, if you love your country because it has good and fair rules, and you want to make it better when it doesn't follow these rules, then you're a constitutional patriot!
