ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Contaminated haemophilia blood products

Okay kiddo, I'll do my best to explain!

So, haemophilia is a condition some people have where their blood doesn't clot very well. That means if they get a cut or scrape, their blood keeps flowing and doesn't make a scab like it's supposed to.

Doctors used to have a treatment for haemophilia that was made from people's blood - it was called a blood product. They would take blood from lots of different people and mix it together to make the treatment.

But, a long time ago, some of the blood that was used to make this haemophilia treatment was contaminated with something called HIV or hepatitis C. Those are very bad viruses that can make people very sick.

The people who got this contaminated haemophilia treatment also got the HIV or hepatitis C virus in their bodies. They didn't know it at first, and some of them got very sick or even died because of it.

Nowadays, doctors have different treatments for haemophilia that don't use human blood, so people don't have to worry about getting contaminated blood products anymore. And, there are rules to make sure that any blood or tissue that gets used for medical treatments is very carefully checked and tested to make sure it's safe.

I hope that helps you understand!
