Continuously variable transmission

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of car transmission that doesn't have fixed gears like other types of transmissions do. Instead, it uses pulleys and a belt or chain to give the car a wide range of gears in one, 'continuous' shift. This means that instead of the usual four or five gears that you have to manually shift between, the CVT can adjust to any number of gears in between and can offer the most efficient ratio for the speed of the car so that it can get up to speed without having to shift up and down until it finds the right gear.
