ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Copyright Act of 1870

Okay, so a long time ago, in the year 1870, some very smart grown-ups made a set of rules called the Copyright Act. This set of rules was supposed to help protect people's creative work, like books or songs or pictures, from other people taking their work without asking or giving them credit.

Before the Copyright Act, it was pretty easy for anybody to just take someone else's work and do whatever they wanted with it. But with the new rules, people had to follow certain rules if they wanted to use somebody else's work.

Think of it like a game of tag. Before the rules were made, it was easy for somebody to tag you all the time, even if you didn't want them to. But after the new rules were made, you could say "Hey, wait a minute! Tagging me without asking is against the rules!" And then they would have to follow the rules and ask you for permission before they could tag you.

So basically, the Copyright Act was a set of rules that helped protect people's creative work from being taken without their permission. And it's still around today, helping to make sure that people get credit for their hard work and creativity.
