Corn grey leaf spot is a sickness that can happen to corn plants. It's caused by a tiny thing called a fungus. You might have heard of mushrooms before. Well, this fungus is sort of like a mushroom but much, much smaller.
When the fungus gets on a corn leaf, it starts to grow its little body and it looks like a grey or brown spot. These spots might spread and turn the leaf yellow or brown. That's when the corn plant gets very sick because the leaves can't get enough sunshine to grow big and strong.
Some things that make corn get sick with grey leaf spot are too much rain or humidity. That's because the fungus likes to grow in wet and moist conditions. It's important for farmers to keep an eye on the corn plants and check for any signs of leaf spots. If they see them, they might use a special spray or fertilizer to try and stop the fungus from spreading.
But sometimes the fungus can be really strong and the corn plants can't fight it off. If that happens, it's very sad because the corn might not grow very big and it won't be as tasty. Farmers have to work very hard to make sure their crops are healthy so we can eat yummy corn!
