Cortiço

A cortiço is a very old type of housing that was common in Brazil a long time ago. It's like a big house divided into lots of little rooms, or apartments. Imagine if you were playing with building blocks and you made a big tower, but then you separated it into lots of little towers. Each little tower would be like a room in a cortiço.

Lots of people used to live in cortiços because they were cheap and easy to find. But the rooms were small and there were lots of people living in the same house. So it was very crowded and sometimes not very safe, because there weren't very many windows or doors.

Nowadays, cortiços are not as common as they used to be. But some people still live in them because they can't afford to live somewhere nicer. There are laws that try to make sure that the cortiços are safe and clean, but it can be hard to enforce these laws because there are so many people living in one place.
