ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cortical blindness

Cortical blindness is when a part of our brain called the cortex doesn't work properly anymore, and we can't see things like we used to. Imagine that your eyes are like a camera taking pictures of everything in front of you, but your brain is the computer that sorts through those pictures and helps you understand what you're seeing.

Now, imagine that something happens to the computer part of your brain that is responsible for helping you see things. It's like the computer screen suddenly went black, and no matter how many pictures the camera takes, you can't see them anymore.

This can happen for many reasons, but sometimes it's because of an injury or a stroke that affects the brain. For people with cortical blindness, it can be really scary because they can't see anything at all or only see some blurry images.

But the good news is that sometimes the brain can heal over time, and people with cortical blindness may be able to see things again with the help of special treatments and therapies that work to retrain their brain to see things in a new way.
